LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Eddie Mathis and
Hunter Spencer didn't need much help Sunday at Knights Field, but the pitching duo got it anyway from their Bellarmine University baseball teammates.
Mathis and Spencer both fired gems and the Knights' offense racked up a combined 24 hits in 11-1 and 5-0 victories over Tiffin in doubleheader action.
Junior left fielder
Griffin Neuer launched a homer in each game for Bellarmine (10-6), which has won three straight and nine of 11. In addition to the splendid pitching and hitting, the Knights didn't commit a single error against Tiffin (6-8) in the doubleheader.
Mathis (2-2) started in the opener and tossed a complete game. The sophomore left-hander allowed one earned run on eight hits with four strikeouts against no walks in 7.0 innings pitched.
Spencer (2-3) piled up a career-high 11 strikeouts in his victory. The junior left-hander yielded three hits and no walks in 8.0 shutout innings. Freshman right-hander
Ryan Henson pitched 1.0 scoreless inning of relief.
In the opener, Bellarmine erupted for seven runs in the first inning. The first four Knights — junior shortstop
Drew Greenwood, sophomore right fielder
Alex Phillips, Neuer and sophomore third baseman
Josh Finerty — all singled. Finerty's base hit brought in two runs, and junior second baseman
Alex Ralph drove in the third with a sacrifice fly.
Bellarmine was only getting started. The Knights sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Freshman center fielder
Bobby Brokamp and Greenwood whacked consecutive two-run doubles for a 7-0 lead.
Finerty and sophomore designated hitter
Zac Wiley had RBI singles in the fourth, and Neuer cranked a two-run homer in the fifth. It was his first home run of the season.
It didn't take Neuer long to record his second. He lifted a solo shot in the first inning of the tail end to stake Bellarmine to an early 1-0 lead. Neuer sparked the Knights' three-run sixth with a leadoff double. Wiley pounded an RBI double, and sophomore first baseman
Jacob Pendred smacked a two-run double.
Greenwood, Phillips, Neuer, Finerty, Wiley and Brokamp had two hits apiece in the opener. Finerty had three RBIs, while Greenwood, Neuer and Brokamp had two each.
Neuer went 3 for 4 in the tail end. Greenwood, Ralph and Wiley had two hits apiece.
