LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Alderson Broaddus at Knights Field, capturing a 6-4 victory behind
Eddie Mathis' complete game before falling 5-3 in the tail end.
Mathis (1-2) tossed his first complete game for Bellarmine (6-5), allowing three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched. The Battlers (5-5) had the tying run on second base in the final frame when the sophomore left-hander induced a game-ending ground out.
Bellarmine managed to score six runs in the opener on six hits. Five of those runs came in the fifth inning, when the Knights notched half of their hits.
Things started off well against Alderson Broaddus starter Randy Dobnak (1-2) as sophomore first baseman
Tyler Neeley walked, junior catcher
Brady Pfaadt singled and freshman center fielder
Bobby Brokamp reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt. Junior shortstop
Drew Greenwood followed with an RBI infield single and both sophomore right fielder
Alex Phillips and junior left fielder
Griffin Neuer forced in runs with walks.
After a pitching change, sophomore third baseman
Josh Finerty lifted a sacrifice fly and junior second baseman
Alex Ralph punched an RBI single through the right side for a 6-3 lead.
Bellarmine wasn't able to muster much offense in the tail end. Phillips had an RBI single in the third and the Knights scored twice in the sixth on an RBI double by Finerty and a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter
Derek Burns. Phillips had two of the team's four hits.
Hunter Spencer (1-3) took the loss in the second game. The junior left-hander allowed two earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched. A dropped fly ball led to two first-inning runs for the Battlers, who added one run apiece in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
Alderson Broaddus' Michael Mnich (2-1) earned the win in the tail end after allowing two earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Jeremy Larkey pitched a scoreless seventh in recording his second save.
Bellarmine will host Alderson Broaddus at noon (ET) Sunday in the finale of a three-game series.
