SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—Mama said there'd be days like this.
Unfortunately for the Bellarmine softball team, it had one of those days that Mama was talking about against the University of Illinois Springfield today.
The host Prairie Stars won both games of the BU-UIS doubleheader on walk off homers in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the opener, the Knights were just one out away from sending the scoreless game into extra innings when UIS' Katie Wooldridge sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to end the game.
Then in game two, Bellarmine battled back to tie the score at two apiece with a run in the top of the seventh only to have UIS catcher Amanda Gosbeth, who was batting in the No. nine position, smack the second pitch she saw over the wall in center field to end the game in the same dramatic fashion.
The sweep by UIS lifts the Prairie Stars to 19-15 on the season while the Knights slip to 15-21.
On the day, Bellarmine totaled just 10 hits.
Paige Dabney went 2-for-2 in the opener to account for two the Knights' three hits. In game two,
Katie Stamper collected two hits in four at bats while scoring once, and
Ciara Incorvati drove in both Bellarmine runs while going 2-for-3.
Sabrina Fussenegger was the hard-luck loser in both games in the circle. The freshman right-hander pitched all 12.2 innings for the Knights and surrendered just one walk.
Bellarmine returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Evansville, Indiana to take on the No. 10 Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.
