Knights baseball sweeps No. 12 Indianapolis with 13-0 and 6-2 victories

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team amassed 29 total hits led by junior shortstop Drew Greenwood and received stellar outings from sophomore Eddie Mathis and junior Hunter Spencer in sweeping No. 12 Indianapolis by scores of 13-0 and 6-2 on Friday at Knights Field in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

In the opener, Mathis (8-2) won his seventh-straight start for Bellarmine (25-15, 12-6 GLVC), firing 7.0 scoreless innings against the Greyhounds (25-15, 9-9) while allowing five hits and striking out four. The left-hander yielded only one run over 13.0 innings in his last two appearances, and his eight wins are tied for the third most in a single season in program history. Freshman right-hander Ryan Henson completed the shutout with 2.0 perfect innings of relief.

In the tail end, Spencer (5-4) gave up two runs — one earned — in the first inning, but the southpaw followed with 6.0 scoreless frames to secure the complete-game victory. It was Spencer's fifth-consecutive appearance allowing two earned runs or less. He went the distance for the fourth time, fanning four while allowing seven hits.

Bellarmine's offense was equally as impressive as its pitching and a defense that committed a lone error over the doubleheader, racking up 18 hits in the opener and 11 more in the tail end. Indianapolis also committed just a single error in the two games, so the Knights had to earn almost everything they got.

And that was certainly quite a bit. In the initial contest, Bellarmine scored a run apiece over the first three innings and exploded for five in the fifth behind a two-run double from junior second baseman Alex Ralph and a three-run double by freshman center fielder Bobby Brokamp.

In the eighth, junior catcher Brady Pfaadt drilled his seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot to left center. Sophomore first baseman Jacob Pendred made it back-to-back blasts with a solo drive to right center for his second homer of the season.

Ralph was 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the first game. Pfaadt was 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Greenwood, junior left fielder Griffin Neuer, sophomore third baseman Josh Finerty and Brokamp all had two hits. Brokamp had three RBIs.

In the second contest, Greenwood went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Pendred added a pair of hits, and Finerty had two RBIs.

After Indianapolis scored twice in the first, Greenwood got Bellarmine going in the right direction by leading off with a single and scoring on Finerty's base hit. The Knights then took the lead for good with a three-run second which featured a Pendred RBI single and RBIs by Neuer and Finerty.

Greenwood added RBI singles in the third and fifth to finish 6 for 7 on the day.

Bellarmine will host Indianapolis in another doubleheader starting at noon (ET) Saturday.
