LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Larry Owens notched his 100th career win as the Bellarmine University baseball coach in Friday's 1-0 victory over Lewis at Knights Field, and he started chasing another milestone as his squad completed the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in the tail end of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
Following a four-game sweep of then-No. 12 Indianapolis, Bellarmine (29-15, 16-6 GLVC) went unbeaten over a twin bill for the third-consecutive time. The two victories against Lewis (12-31, 6-16) boosted the Knights' winning streak to seven.
In the opener, Bellarmine sophomore left-hander
Eddie Mathis and Pete Hamot engaged in a pitcher's duel. It was scoreless in the ninth and the Knights had compiled only two hits when junior shortstop
Drew Greenwood bashed a triple deep down the right-field line leading off the final frame.
Sophomore right fielder
Alex Phillips followed by lofting a medium fly ball to right, and Greenwood slid home with the winning run on the sacrifice fly just as the ball arrived from the outfield. Phillips broke up Hamot's no-hit bid with a perfectly executed bunt single in the sixth.
While Mathis' streak of wins in consecutive starts was halted at seven, the southpaw was once again superb, tossing 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out seven in a no-decision. Junior right-hander
Yancey Pritchett (4-0) earned the win while fanning three in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Hamot (1-3) took the hard-luck loss, allowing three hits and striking out two.
In the tail end, Bellarmine had more hits — 4-3 — through its first four batters than it did in the entire opener. Greenwood, Phillips, junior left fielder
Griffin Neuer and sophomore third baseman
Josh Finerty all singled, with Finerty's base hit driving in two runs against Sam Couch (4-3). Senior catcher
Christopher Allen tacked on another run with an RBI single, and the Knights scored again off a throwing error for a 4-1 lead.
Bellarmine scored only one more run after that when freshman center fielder
Bobby Brokamp singled leading off the fourth and crossed home on Neuer's sacrifice fly, but the Knights' big first inning was enough as junior left-hander
Hunter Spencer (6-4) tossed an efficient complete game.
Allowing three earned runs or less for the sixth-straight start, Spencer worked 7.0 innings and struck out five while giving up seven hits. He went the distance for the fifth time this season.
Greenwood and Phillips had two hits apiece for Bellarmine in the second game.
Bellarmine hosts Lewis in another doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday. It will be the Knights' Senior Day.
