RENSSELAER, Ind.—The host St. Joseph's Pumas pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to win game two 5-4 and salvage a split against Bellarmine in a Great Lakes Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Puma Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights had won the opener 6-3 behind a 14-hit effort, led by
Paige Dabney,
Kelly Ely and
Katie Stamper, who all were 3-for-4 at the plate.
With the split, Bellarmine moves to 18-24 on the season with a 6-12 mark in league play. The Pumas now stand 13-22 and are tied with the Knights at 6-12 in GLVC play.
In the opener, Bellarmine notched the first runs of the day when Ely ripped a two-run homer in the top of the second. The Knights weren't finished in the frame as
Erica Knollman,
Rachel Fox, and Dabney each singled to give Bellarmine a 3-0 lead.
The Pumas clawed back to within a run in the bottom of third with a pair of runs on two hits and a Bellarmine error.
The Knights struck back for three more runs in the fourth with Ely,
Melissa Hammer, Fox and Dabney providing the base hits.
Saint Joseph's banged out four hits in the fifth, but Bellarmine limited the damage to just one run as the Knights hung on to claim the 6-3 victory.
In game two, the Pumas broke out on top with three runs in the bottom of the second, but the Knights had an immediate answer in the top of the third as Fox delivered a triple with the bases loaded to knot the score at three apiece. Dabney's grounder to second base then plated Fox as the Knights grabbed a 4-3 lead.
However, the Bellarmine offense stalled after the 4-run third inning, managing just two more base hits the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, the Pumas kept pecking away and finally came through with a run in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.
Olivia Russell stroked a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but an inning-ending double play quickly erased Bellarmine's scoring opportunity.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights failed to record an out as two singles sandwiched around a Bellarmine error gave the Pumas the 5-4 victory.
