SOMERS, Wisc. — Wisconsin-Parkside didn't look like a team that had been winless in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, and the Rangers weren't by the end of Friday's match with the visiting Bellarmine University women's soccer team.
Wisconsin-Parkside broke a 1-all tie early in the second half and held on to defeat Bellarmine 2-1 at Wood Road Field.
"It was a tough result today; more of the same from us," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "We knew Parkside's best soccer was very good, and we continue to be Jekyll and Hyde from day to day and even within games."
Sophomore forward
Kenzi Gooley, a Ball State transfer, scored her first goal in a Bellarmine uniform. Freshman midfielder
Samantha Ferry notched an assist for the Knights (3-2-2, 2-2-2 GLVC) against the Rangers (2-7-1, 1-5-1).
Wisconsin-Parkside got on the board first when Maycee Kroening scored off a rebound of her own shot for a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. After the score was tied 1-1 at halftime, Kroening found the net again in the 50th minute when she freed up at the top of the box and sank what stood as the game-winning goal.
Bellarmine's goal came in the 42nd minute when Ferry played a nice through ball toward the center of the box to Gooley, who rifled in the open shot.
Wisconsin-Parkside finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots, including 7-3 on goal. It was the first time Bellarmine's defense allowed more than one goal in a match this season.
Bellarmine plays Sunday at Lewis.
"We've said all along we wanted to have an idea who our core was and what combinations were working best and most consistently by the time the calendar changed to October," Tinius said. "Everyone has gotten a lot of minutes, and I think we are getting a pretty good picture of what that looks like in our best moments. We are going to take the positives from today and move forward with those."
