Knights volleyball keeps rolling, knocks off Malone in straight sets at Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS — The Bellarmine University volleyball team entered the Midwest Region Crossover with plenty of momentum, and the Knights simply steamrolled the competition on the first day.

Following a 3-0 win over Wayne State earlier Friday, Bellarmine delivered a 3-0 victory over Malone in the evening by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 at The Academy Volleyball Club.

Bellarmine (14-8) boosted its winning streak to five, with the latest victim being Malone (13-10), which defeated the Knights in straight sets in the season opener. Bellarmine defeated the five opponents during its string by a combined score of 15-1, with then-No. 15 Lewis taking a lone set against the Knights.

Senior Jordyn Kuchenbrod, who against Wayne State cracked Division II's all-time top 10 in career digs, racked up 28 more against Malone. That was a match high and so were the 13 kills and six blocks of senior Katie Adams. Freshman Bailey Roszman added seven kills as the Knights had a 44-31 superiority in that area. Sophomore Kristen O'Toole compiled 24 assists and freshman Sam Rickert chipped in 13 more. Sophomores Izzie Salameh and Abbie Oetting totaled three blocks apiece.

The Knights didn't record a single service error for the first time this season and had one total in the two matches Friday. On the other side, Malone had six service errors.

The first set was tied up when Bellarmine went on a 5-1 run capped by an Oetting kill to lead 18-14. Malone rallied facing a steep 24-17 deficit, but Roszman finished off the set with a kill after the Pioneers had crept within two.

Bellarmine built a comfortable advantage in the second set as an Adams kill gave the Knights a 14-8 lead. Malone hung around and got to within 18-15, but Bellarmine responded with four straight points. Adams scored the Knights' final three points on kills as they took the frame convincingly.

The same could be said of the third set. Bellarmine opened with a 4-0 surge and basically never looked back, climbing to a 16-8 advantage and 22-11 margin before closing out the sweep of the Pioneers.

Bellarmine will conclude the Crossover with a 1 p.m. (ET) match Saturday against Grand Valley State.
