Bellarmine sets school record with 10th straight win by downing USI 3-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The Bellarmine volleyball team earned a 3-1 road victory over Southern Indiana on Saturday to set a school record with its 10th consecutive win.

The Knights were fairly dominant in their three set victories as they hit .314 in the match while holding the Screaming Eagles to an attack percentage of .081.

Bellarmine senior Katie Adams continued her strong play of late, finishing just one shy of her career-best with 16 kills while hitting at a .438 clip.

The Knights got off to a rousing start by rolling over Southern Indiana 25-13 in the first set. The Bellarmine offense was hitting on all cylinders as the Knights posted 18 kills in the frame with just two errors.

Bellarmine sort of came back down to Earth in the second stanza as USI grabbed a quick 5-1 lead, and the Knights didn't recover from the slow start.  Although BU came back to knot the score at 18, 19, 20 and 21, the Knights couldn't wrestle the lead away from the Screaming Eagles as USI closed the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-21.

The third set belonged to Bellarmine pretty much from start to finish.  The Knights never trailed and strung together an early 6-0 run take control 14-3 before going on to post a 25-11 win.

In the fourth set, the Knights looked poised to again steamroll the Screaming Eagles by jumping out to a 19-5 lead. However, the host team strung together a four-point run followed by a 7-0 spurt to get within five at 21-16.  That would be as close as USI would get as the Knights closed out the match with a 4-1 run to win 25-17.

While Adams was the team leader, there was no shortage of solid play by the Knights.  Front row players Abbie Oetting, Julia Dailey, Bailey Roszman and Izzie Salameh all posted solid numbers while setters Kristen O'Toole and Sam Rickert combined for 56 assists. Jacquie Hornung, meanwhile, produced on the front row and back row with seven kills and 18 digs.

Jordyn Kuchenbrod also continues to produce impressive statistics, and with 27 digs today moved into sixth on the DII all-time digs list with a career total of 2,857.  The Louisville senior also added three service aces.

Bellarmine, which improved to 19-8 and 10-6 in the GLVC, broke the record of nine straight match wins established by the 2010 team.  The Knights finish the month of October a perfect 10-0 with their last defeat coming September 29 at Rockhurst.

The win streak has helped lift Bellarmine to sixth in the GLVC standings after starting the year just 1-4 in league play.

The Knights close out the regular season with a pair of home matches on Friday and Saturday. Bellarmine faces McKendree at 7 p.m. on Friday, and hosts Illinois-Springfield at 3 p.m. on Saturday, which will be senior day.
