Knights women's soccer falls late in second overtime to Lewis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kailey Parnello scored two goals, including the game-winner in double overtime, as Lewis defeated the Bellarmine University women's soccer team 2-1 Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Freshman forward Isabella Zamborini scored a goal deep in the second half for Bellarmine (6-4-1, 4-2-1 GLVC) while sophomore midfielder Samantha Ferry had an assist against the Flyers (6-3-2, 5-2).

"There was a lot of good stuff today — much more positive than negative," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "We played very well at times and created a lot of chances, but we have to finish."

Finishing is what Lewis' leading scorer did in the second overtime. With a little over a minute left, Mallory Richardson made a lead pass for Parnello toward the right corner. Parnello tracked the ball down and made a hard cut inside to avoid a defender and free herself for an open look. She struck the ball on the right side of the box and fired a shot inside the far post for the game-winning goal. With two goals, Parnello has seven for the season.

Bellarmine had a 19-5 advantage in shots. The Knights allowed just two in regulation time and didn't allow any in the first overtime. However, Lewis had three attempts in the second overtime, all of which came off the foot of Parnello, with the last ending the match.

"Lewis is a good team and we knew they knew how to get results on the road," Tinius said. "Today I felt we had a hold on the game. We went to a look that opened the game up a bit more and got us forward more. Unfortunately, the idea of creating more chances is countered by being more exposed. In the last year and half, it's been proven that's not an even trade for us because we've lacked the conviction in finishing. More chances hasn't necessarily led to better results for us. That's my fault for going that route down the stretch today rather than readjusting after we scored to make sure we got a result."

After a scoreless first half, Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute on Parnello's first goal. The Knights, who had dangerous chances throughout the match, finally broke through with a goal in the 83rd minute as Zamborini headed in a cross from Ferry to knot the match at 1.

Bellarmine attempted five shots in the first overtime and three in the second, as senior midfielder Audrey Van Der Elst nearly ended the match in the first extra frame only to watch her shot carom off the crossbar.
Bellarmine hosts Rockhurst at noon (ET) Sunday.

"We have to be ready," Tinius said. "It was already an important game, but now it's vital to get a result if we are aiming for a home game in the conference tournament. It's important just to continue moving us toward being in the conference tournament. It's crazy how quickly the perspective can change, but that's how it is in GLVC."
