LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Jacob Mulcahy knew how to introduce himself to the Bellarmine University baseball team's home crowd.
On Sunday at nearby St. Xavier High School, the freshman first baseman piled up six RBIs in a 14-6 win over Ashland in the opening game of a doubleheader and followed that with a clutch two-run double in a 5-4 victory in the finale.
Senior second baseman
Alex Ralph was a single short of hitting for the cycle in the first contest for Bellarmine (2-3), which played in Louisville for the first time this season. Senior right fielder
Zac Wiley also stood out at the plate against Ashland (0-2) after going 4 for 6 in his two outings. Senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood had a two-hit game in the opener.
Relievers collected both wins for Bellarmine. In the initial contest, freshman right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt (1-0) notched his first collegiate victory after allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. In the finale, sophomore right-hander
Jacob Nagel (1-1) followed a solid outing by senior left-hander
Hunter Spencer with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief in which he struck out two.
Coming off a season-opening three-game sweep at the hands of Montevallo, Bellarmine erupted for four runs in the first inning its first time at bat. Greenwood led off with a single, Ralph drove him in with a double to left center and scored after senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt's walk on Wiley's blast off the right-center wall. Two batters later, Mulcahy ripped a two-run double down the left-field line.
Bellarmine added three more runs in the second on Ralph's RBI triple and Mulcahy's two-run single and four more in the fourth with a lot of help from two Ashland errors. Ralph led off the fifth by launching the first home run of his collegiate career, a solo shot to right center. Mulcahy pounded an RBI double to center to drive in his sixth run of the game.
In the second contest, Bellarmine was trailing 4-2 in the eighth when Mulcahy stepped to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second. He tied the game at 4 after pounding a two-run double down the right-field line off impressive starter Devin Peters (0-1), who was then relieved by Josh Stover.
Senior left fielder
Griffin Neuer followed by hitting a screamer that deflected off Stover and was fielded by the shortstop. His throw to first was wide and allowed Mulcahy to race home with the go-ahead run.
Nagel opened the ninth with a strikeout and, after a single, induced a game-ending 5-4-3 double play to seal the sweep.
Bellarmine hosts Hillsdale in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Knights Field. Both start at noon (ET).
