Fussenegger, keen base running push Knights softball to split with Miners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University softball team used savvy base running and a superb outing by Sabrina Fussenegger to carve out a split with Missouri S&T on Saturday at Knights Field.

In its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, Bellarmine dropped the first game 4-3 before regrouping to post a 2-0 win in the finale.

In the final contest, Fussenegger (3-4) fired a complete-game shutout for Bellarmine (9-9, 1-1 GLVC). The sophomore right-hander allowed five hits and walked one while striking out one against Missouri S&T (9-11, 1-1). It was her second straight complete-game performance and first shutout.

Bellarmine scored both its runs in the second inning due in large part to perceptive base running. Senior third baseman Marlee Tevis and junior right fielder Miranda Mader both hit into fielder's choices in the frame and raced safely into second base when the bag was initially unprotected.

Sophomore designated player Samantha Smith drove Tevis in with a single, and junior left fielder Allison Woosley brought home Mader with a double. Fussenegger took care of things from there for the Knights.

Smith had two of Bellarmine's six hits in the finale. The Knights collected eight in the opener as sophomore second baseman Rachel Ayer went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Fussenegger added two hits, including a double.

In the first game, Bellarmine scored twice in the first with two outs as Fussenegger doubled and scored on Ayer's single, and junior catcher Ciara Incorvati tacked on another run with an RBI double.

Missouri S&T took the lead in the third on Olivia Young's three-run homer, and the Miners went up 4-2 after scoring a run in the fifth. Bellarmine cut that deficit in half in the sixth as Smith drove in Ayer with a two-out single, but the Knights went down in order in the final inning.

Bellarmine hosts Ohio Dominican in a doubleheader starting at noon (ET) Sunday.
