Cotter joins 100-win club as Knights women's tennis defeats NAIA's No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan

GREENTOWN, Ind. — Senior Mairin Cotter became the latest member of the Bellarmine University women's tennis team's suddenly rapidly expanding 100-win club as the visiting Knights defeated Indiana Wesleyan 8-1 Friday at the Howard County Tennis Center.

Bellarmine improved to 13-1 and defeated yet another quality opponent in Indiana Wesleyan, which is ranked ninth in the NAIA and boasts an impressive 23-2 record.

Bellarmine's 100-win club has doubled during this season. Graduates Rebecca Porter, Sydney Thompson and Caitlin Hanley began the year as the club's only members, but senior Marissa Kovach, junior Maggie Walroth and now Cotter have all joined them this season at the exclusive table.

Cotter notched her 100th career win in the No. 3 doubles match as she and senior Bess Fley defeated Marissa Klein and Laura Moore 8-6. That doubles contest and the one at No. 1 where Walroth and sophomore Ashley Jonathan rallied from a 3-6 deficit by winning five straight games for an 8-6 victory underscored how competitive the match was despite the lopsided final outcome.

That said, sophomore Jennifer Skonieczny and freshman Ava Ratcliff did roll 8-1 at No. 2 doubles as Bellarmine built a big lead heading into singles play.

"This could have been a lot trickier if we lost one or two of the doubles matches," Knights Coach John Mican said. "Maggie and Ashley made an unbelievably determined comeback. We fought like champs in doubles. It was a huge team effort to sweep."

Skonieczny, at No. 1 singles, and Jonathan, at No. 3, clinched the match as they both rallied to win after dropping the first set behind dominant second and third sets. Kovach was winning the first set handily when her opponent retired at No. 4, and Ratcliff (No. 5) and Cotter (No. 6) triumphed playing in a pro sets format as the Knights had already locked down the team victory.
