ST. LOUIS — On Saturday at Maryville, the Bellarmine University baseball team put its road struggles behind it in a big way.
The Knights piled up the runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Saints, following a 14-6 pasting with a 13-2 crushing at Weber Baseball Field to extend their winning streak to five.
Senior left fielder
Griffin Neuer homered in each contest and boosted his team-best total to five for Bellarmine (11-5), which entered Saturday 0-5 on the road. Ending the streak of futility against Maryville (8-13) was never in doubt — the Knights led 6-0 after five innings in the opener and 11-2 after four frames in the tail end.
In the first game,
Eddie Mathis (3-1) won his third straight start. The junior left-hander tossed 6.0 shutout innings and struck out eight while allowing four hits. Over his last three outings, Mathis allowed only two earned runs over 22 innings.
Bellarmine muscled up in the opener in launching three home runs. Junior third baseman
Josh Finerty had a two-run blast in the third, Neuer drilled a three-run shot in the sixth and junior designated hitter
Tyler Neeley walloped a three-run drive in the ninth. Neuer's round-tripper made it 11-0.
Junior center fielder
Alex Phillips recorded two of Bellarmine's 10 hits. Freshman right fielder
Matt Higgins had a two-run double and junior designated hitter
Zac Wiley went 1 for 1 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
In the second game, Neuer lifted a three-run homer and sophomore center fielder
Bobby Brokamp added a two-run shot. Neuer amassed four RBIs and senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt had three. Senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood collected a pair of doubles and three runs scored and Finerty and Neeley also had two hits apiece.
Greenwood led off the game with a double, and Neuer cranked his fifth home run of the season as the Knights scored four runs in the first and never looked back. They scored four more runs in the fourth as their lead grew to 11-2.
Sophomore right-hander
Jacob Nagel (2-1) earned the win after allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander
Will Seewer pitched a scoreless seventh.
Bellarmine and Maryville are both in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, but non-divisional games don't count toward the league standings.
Bellarmine plays a Sunday doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
