Knights struggle on offense as McKendree sweeps doubleheader

LEBANON, Ill.—The Bellarmine Knights softball team had trouble finding offense in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at McKendree on Sunday afternoon, falling 11-0 in six innings in game one and dropping a 6-0 decision in the closing game.

In the opener, McKendree pitcher Miranda Gajewski allowed just three Bellarmine hits as the Knights only sent 21 batters to the plate in the six-inning affair.

Meanwhile, the Bearcats banged out 15 base knocks with the biggest of those off the bat of Haegen Boyer, who smashed a walk-off grand slam in the bottom the sixth.  It was Boyer's second homer of the game and gave her six RBIs on the day.

Bellarmine threatened on two occasions, but stranded runners in scoring position in three different innings. Coming up with the Knights' three hits were Lillie Nitzken, Samantha Smith and Katie Stamper.

McKendree scored in all six innings with the four-run sixth being the biggest frame for the Bearcats.

In game two, McKendree kept the momentum going by plating a run in the bottom of the first to take a quick 1-0 lead.  Bellarmine minimized the damage, however, as Mary Jessica Thomson, who got the start in right field, gunned down a Bearcat runner at the plate to end the inning.

While the Knights held firm in the second frame, McKendree continued its consistent scoring with a run in the third and two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead.

Bellarmine, meanwhile, managed only five baserunners in the game, and three of those were eliminated on double plays later in the inning. The Knights totaled just two hits—singles by Sabrina Fussenegger and Alexa Foster in game two.

Bearcat starting pitcher Kylee Silliman allowed just one hit in her five innings of work without surrendering a walk, although she did hit a batter and a Bearcat error allowed another runner. However, with two double plays helping her out, Silliman still faced just one over the minimum in her outing.

The Knights fall to 10-14 on the season with a 1-5 mark in league play.  The Bearcats improve to 18-7 and 4-2 in the GLVC.

Bellarmine stays on the road for its next action, traveling to Indianapolis on Saturday for doubleheader against the Greyhounds.
