Knights baseball completes series sweep of No. 7 UIndy behind HR barrage

INDIANAPOLIS — Clearly the Bellarmine University baseball team wasn't satisfied with Friday's doubleheader sweep of seventh-ranked Indianapolis.

On Saturday at Greyhound Park, the Knights completed the four-game series sweep of their top 10 opponent, defeating UIndy 9-7 and 11-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Bellarmine is off to terrific start in the GLVC, boosting its record to 7-1 in league action and 20-8 overall after sweeping Indianapolis (17-8, 3-5) for the second straight season. The Knights have won 14 of their last 17 games.

Bellarmine isn't a team that's overly reliant on the long ball, but it's certainly a part of the Knights' arsenal. Bellarmine showcased its power at the plate on Saturday, bashing six home runs over the two games, including four in the finale.

Bellarmine trailed 5-0 in the opener after four innings but overcame four UIndy homers in rallying for the win. Senior left fielder Griffin Neuer got the Knights on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, and junior third baseman Josh Finerty followed with a two-run single.

The long balls began in the sixth. After consecutive singles by junior center fielder Alex Phillips and senior shortstop Drew Greenwood, senior catcher Brady Pfaadt launched a game-tying three-run homer to left center.

Each team scored once in the seventh to knot the score at 7. With one out in the eighth, Finerty followed Neuer's triple with a go-ahead two-run homer to left center. Neuer pitched a scoreless bottom half to record his second save. Sophomore right-hander Anthony Ethington (2-0) earned the win after 2.0 innings of relief.

Greenwood went 4 for 5 in the first game. Pfaadt, Neuer and Finerty added two hits apiece. Finerty accumulated four RBIs.

Wiley jump-started Bellarmine in the tail end with a three-run homer in the first inning, and Neuer added a solo shot in the fifth for his team-best eighth round-tripper. The Knights then exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning as sophomore catcher Chris Gambert blasted a two-run shot for his first collegiate homer, Neuer laced a two-run single and Finerty left the yard yet again, this time a three-run shot.

Finerty's homer pumped the lead up to 11-2. UIndy answered with five runs in the bottom half, but the deficit ultimately was too much to overcome. Senior right-hander Yancey Pritchett sealed the victory with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (4-1) allowed two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings in collecting the win.

Junior first baseman Jacob Pendred went 3 for 3 in the finale. Neuer added three hits and Finerty and sophomore center fielder Bobby Brokamp had two apiece.

Bellarmine plays a doubleheader Wednesday at Lincoln Memorial.
