OWENSBORO, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team rebounded nicely from a disappointing weekend at Wisconsin-Parkside by sweeping a doubleheader Tuesday at Kentucky Wesleyan by scores of 5-1 and 9-1.
It was a fine day of baseball at Panther Park for Bellarmine (26-10) in the nonconference twin bill as the Knights racked up 24 hits, committed a single error and received solid pitching across the board against Kentucky Wesleyan (17-16) over the two games.
Kyle Beach (1-0) earned the win in the opener. The junior right-hander admirably sidestepped several KWC scoring threats in allowing a single run on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Senior right-hander
Yancey Pritchett tossed a scoreless seventh.
In the tail end, junior left-hander
Alex Phillips (3-1) notched the win after yielding only two hits and no walks in 4.0 shutout innings. Senior right-hander
Nolan May, junior left-hander
Willie Poe and senior right-hander
Duncan Amrein each pitched an inning of relief as the Knights cruised to victory.
In the opener, junior third baseman
Josh Finerty got things rolling in the right direction for Bellarmine when he cracked a two-out, three-run homer in the first inning. Senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood and senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt set up Finerty's fourth round-tripper of the season with consecutive singles.
Pfaadt drove in a run in the second, and senior second baseman
Alex Ralph added an RBI single in the fifth. Greenwood and Phillips had two hits each in the first game.
In the finale, Bellarmine hammered KWC for three runs in the second and four in the third. Greenwood laced a two-run double in the second and was driven in on junior designated hitter
Derek Burns' single.
Senior left fielder
Griffin Neuer led off the third with a triple and scored on Finerty's RBI single. Junior first baseman
Jacob Pendred then cranked his first homer of the season, a two-run shot. Greenwood followed with an RBI triple.
Bellarmine added two more runs in the sixth on back-to-back homers by Ralph and sophomore catcher
Chris Gambert. It was Ralph's third long ball of the season and Gambert's fourth.
Freshman center fielder
Matt Higgins went 3 for 3 in the tail end. Pendred went 3 for 4 and Greenwood and Gambert chipped in two hits each.
Bellarmine hosts Southern Indiana in GLVC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is at noon (ET) both days.
