LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine softball team salvaged a split in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against William Jewell College on Friday afternoon at Knights Field. After dropping the opener 5-0, Bellarmine came up with four runs in the bottom of the sixth in game two and held on to win 4-2.
In the opener, Bellarmine struggled to get base hits to fall as WJC pitcher Anna Biondo took a one-hitter into the seventh inning. The Knights recorded two of their three base hits in the final frame, but stranded two runners to end the game.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals crossed the plate in just two innings. They got all they needed in the third inning as the WJC bats heated up with five base hits as they plated three runs.
William Jewell tacked another two runs in the sixth to make the final 5-0.
Game two was a shut out until the Knights broke through in the bottom of the sixth by taking advantage of a William Jewell error to score four unearned runs. With runners at first and second and two outs, Marlee Tevis hit a grounder to short that was cleanly fielded but in trying to the get force out at second, the throw was wide, ending up in right field. Rachel Ayer, who had been at second, motored all the way home to score the first run of the game.
The Knights didn't stop there, however. Allison Woosley followed with a single to left that got past the Jewell left fielder as two more runs scored and Woosley ended up at third. Alexa Foster then delivered a single to drive in Woosley and make the score 4-0.
As is turned out, Bellarmine needed the insurance runs. The Cardinals smacked three doubles in the top of the seventh to score a pair of runs, prompting Coach Renee Hicks to go the bullpen. Alexis Sumner came on to relieve starter Madeline Kurtz and recorded the final out as the Knights hung on for the 4-2 victory.
With the split, Bellarmine moves to 13-23, 4-14 GLVC while Jewell is now 21-17, 8-10 GLVC)
The Knights will host Truman State tomorrow at 1 p.m. in doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Sunday.
