LEBANON, Ill. — If it already wasn't the case, program history and this year's Bellarmine University women's tennis team have officially become synonymous.
There's no debate after Saturday. The Knights made sure of that.
Bellarmine added to its unprecedented feats while visiting McKendree, as the Knights demolished the Bearcats 9-0 to capture a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title and secure the No. 1 seed from the East in the GLVC Tournament.
The division championship and the top seed are program firsts for the Knights (20-2, 4-1 GLVC), who, with 20 wins and counting, are already the winningest squad in program history. Ranked third in the Midwest Region and 27th nationally, Bellarmine concluded its brilliant regular season against league rival McKendree (2-12, 0-5).
This was a team that smelled blood — in the form of a division title and No. 1 seed — and pounced on the Bearcats. Bellarmine didn't drop a game in two of the three doubles matches and still romped in the other, winning 8-3. Every single one of the singles matches was decided in straight sets. The Knights dropped a grand total of six games in those six contests.
It was yet another muscle-flexing performance from a squad that's largely dominated the opposition this season. Junior
Maggie Walroth and sophomore
Ashley Jonathan triumphed 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, and seniors
Mairin Cotter and
Bess Fley did the same at No. 3. Senior
Marissa Kovach and sophomore
Jennifer Skonieczny posted a strong five-game advantage, 8-3, at No. 2.
There was zero drop-off in play in singles action. From Nos. 1-6, Skonieczny, Walroth, Jonathan, Kovach, freshman
Aubrey Smith and Fley controlled play. Jonathan, Smith and Fley didn't lose a single game. Skonieczny and Kovach dropped one game each. Walroth posted a doughnut in the loss column in the first set and won 6-4 in the second.
