LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team finally ran out of comebacks but not before one final stirring revival in its series against Southern Indiana.
In Sunday's opening game at St. Xavier High School, the Knights scored six runs in the sixth inning in rallying again for an improbable 7-6 victory before the Screaming Eagles racked up 16 hits in winning the tail end 13-8 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Bellarmine (29-11, 12-4 GLVC) captured three of the four games in the series against Southern Indiana (18-16, 9-7). Two of the three required monumental comebacks. In Friday's series opener, the Knights trailed 5-0 heading into the final inning before scoring six times in an amazing surge to victory.
In Sunday's first game, Bellarmine trailed 6-1 leading into the bottom of the sixth, its only run coming on a solo homer by junior center fielder
Alex Phillips. With one out, the Knights got consecutive singles from junior third baseman
Josh Finerty and senior second baseman
Alex Ralph.
Tyler Hagedorn relieved starter Devin Williams and walked freshman designated hitter
Matt Higgins and junior first baseman
Jacob Pendred, the latter free pass forcing in a run. Phillips followed by ripping a two-run double down the right-field line as Bellarmine pushed within 6-4.
Jacob Bowles entered to pitch and the Knights scored a run on a wild pitch before senior shortstop
Drew Greenwood walked. Dalton Lewis relieved Bowles (1-1), and senior catcher
Brady Pfaadt greeted him with an RBI single up the middle that plated the tying run. Junior right fielder
Zac Wiley then drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Senior right-hander
Duncan Amrein earned his second save with a scoreless seventh. Bellarmine ended the game on a double play, as Greenwood caught a pop out and fired to first in time to get a USI baserunner scrambling back to the bag after having to reverse course on a would-be steal attempt.
Junior right-hander
Kyle Beach (2-0) notched the win after tossing 3.0 innings of relief in which he didn't allow an earned run. Phillips went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.
Southern Indiana was highly impressive at the plate in the second game. The Screaming Eagles pounded out 16 hits and all 13 of their runs scored were earned — Bellarmine didn't assist them defensively, committing no errors. USI led 8-5 before scoring five runs in the eighth.
Bellarmine scored twice in the ninth, but this time there was no miraculous comeback. The Knights collected 13 hits, with Wiley stroking three doubles and adding two RBIs. Ralph also had three hits, including an RBI triple, and Finerty doubled twice.
Sophomore catcher
Chris Gambert blistered a solo homer to dead center — his fifth long ball of the season — and drilled the wall with an RBI double. Phillips entered late and smacked an RBI double to cap a stellar day in the batter's box.
Bellarmine hosts Kentucky State at 3 p.m. (ET) Wednesday in a nonconference game.
