KANSAS CITY, Mo.--The host Rockhurst Hawks pulled out a 2-1 victory in the bottom of the 13th inning of game two to salvage a split against the Bellarmine Knights in a Great Lakes Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Loyola Park on Sunday afternoon.
Bellarmine had taken game one of the doubleheader as sophomore pitcher
Sabrina Fussenegger scattered seven Hawks hits to record a complete game shutout. The game's only runs came in the top of the third when three BU seniors combined to produce the scores. Seniors
Katie Stamper and
Kaitlin Barbiere opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and after a sacrifice bunt, fellow senior
Lillie Nitzken drove home both her classmates with a single to right field.
As it turned out, the Knights were very efficient with their scoring as they managed just one hit the rest of the game, a single by
Allison Woosley in the sixth.
The second game featured two outstanding pitching performances as Bellarmine's
Olivia Knies and Rockhurst's Shannon Greene pitched the entire 13-inning game.
Rockhurst's Lauren Marks broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Bellarmine fought back to force extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh, but came agonizingly close to pulling ahead. Fussenegger came in to pinch hit with one out and delivered a double to right and advanced to third on a Rockhurst error. Stamper followed with a single to drive in Fussenegger, Then after a fly out, Woosley singled and took second when Rockhurst tried to throw out Stamper. With a base open, the Hawks issued an intentional walk to Nitzken to load the bases. However, the Knights could not take advantage of the situation as Rockhurst escaped with ground out to the pitcher.Â
Â
In the extra frames, the Knights got runners in scoring position in the 12th and 13th innings while the Hawks squandered scoring opportunities in the eighth, ninth, 11th and 12th innings before finally breaking through with the game-winning run in the 13th.
Bellarmine outhit Rockhurst 12-10 in the game with Woosley, Nitzken,
Alexa Foster and Stamper each collecting two base knocks to lead the Knights.
With the split, Bellarmine's overall record moves to 15-27 with a 6-18 mark in league play. Rockhurst is now 19-26 and 13-11 in the GLVC.
The Knights will close out their season with doubleheaders at home on Saturday and Sunday against Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis. Both doubleheaders are slated to begin at noon..
