Spencer whirls 2-hit shutout as Knights baseball splits with Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Senior left-hander Hunter Spencer fired a two-hit shutout as the No. 25 Bellarmine University baseball team blanked Lewis 7-0 in Sunday's opener before the Flyers rallied from an 8-0 deficit to defeat the Knights 12-9 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Bellarmine (33-12, 15-5 GLVC) took three of four from Lewis (16-22, 8-11) at Brennan Field. Spencer (5-1) became the third straight starting pitcher for the Knights — following junior left-hander Eddie Mathis and sophomore right-hander Jacob Nagel — to toss 7.0 shutout innings against the Flyers.

Spencer notched a complete-game shutout in the opener. He struck out five against one walk. The Knights racked up 11 hits and scored two runs each in the third, sixth and seventh innings while plating one in the fifth.

Junior center fielder Alex Phillips had a pair of RBI singles. Junior third baseman Josh Finerty smacked his sixth home run of the season and had two hits. Junior right fielder Zac Wiley added two hits and two RBIs, and sophomore designated hitter Chris Gambert chipped in two hits and two runs scored.

In the tail end, Bellarmine unloaded eight runs in the second inning. Freshman designated hitter Jacob Mulcahy, returning from injury, Gambert and senior left fielder Griffin Neuer all had two-run singles in the frame.

After the top of the second, the Knights had outscored the Flyers 33-2 and outhit them 50-9 in the series. Stunningly, Lewis completely turned the tables, outscoring Bellarmine 12-1 and outhitting it 15-5 the rest of the game.

Mulcahy went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the tail end while senior second baseman Alex Ralph added three hits. Neuer and senior shortstop Drew Greenwood contributed two hits.

Bellarmine closes the regular season by hosting Illinois Springfield in GLVC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
