LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Talk about not wasting any time getting the home crowd jazzed up for the 2018 season.
On Wednesday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored inside the first minute and added two more goals in the first half as the Knights romped 3-0 over Hanover in their second exhibition of the preseason.
Sophomore midfielder
Jonas Skulstad, sophomore midfielder
Micah Linscott and junior forward
Tomas Bernedo scored one goal apiece for the Knights, while Bernedo, sophomore midfielder
Collin Rose and junior defender
Chris Hunt collected one assist each.
Bellarmine went 9-0 last season at Frazier Stadium, and that home dominance carried over to its first exhibition on its home turf this year. Shortly after the opening kick, Rose beat the defense down the right side and crossed to Skulstad in the goal area for an easy finish and lightning quick 1-0 lead.
Bellarmine boosted the lead to 2-0 before the exhibition was eight minutes old. Hunt raced down the right sideline and passed to Bernedo near the top of the box. Bernedo then spotted Linscott on the left side, and he drilled a shot from approximately 12 yards.
Bellarmine tacked on another score — which ended up being its last — in the 20th minute. A hustling Bernedo beat Hanover's goalkeeper to a loose ball and chipped it over his head and into the net for a 3-0 lead.
In an exhibition with a slew of substitutions, Bellarmine held an 11-5 advantage in shots and an 8-2 superiority in corner kicks. Senior
Zach Pogue and freshman
Connor Range combined for the shutout in goal, each playing a half.
Bellarmine will host Spalding at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday in its final exhibition.
