Knights roll to pair of wins on first day of Kickoff Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team swept all six sets in their two matches in the 2018 Bellarmine Volleyball Kickoff Classic today in Knights Hall.  After dominating the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 25-15, 25-10, 25-16, the Knights came back at 7 p.m. and trounced the Tigers of West Alabama 25-10, 25-16, 25-22.

The victories, which came in Bellarmine's home debut, propelled to the Knights to 4-2 on the season.

Against the Bobcats (0-2), Bellarmine broke out of the gates with an explosive set one, hitting .517 while recording 16 kills on just 29 total attacks.

Bellarmine cooled a bit in the final two sets, but the Knights finished the match with a .384 hitting percentage led by freshman Bailey Roszman and sophomore Abbie Oetting.  That duo combined for 22 kills without committing an error, and Jacquie Hornung added 12 kills to tie Oetting for game-high honors.

Bellarmine's second match of the day also featured strong hitting numbers for the Knights.  Again Roszman posted a strong effort with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage while Hornung matched those 11 kills to again tie for game-high honors.
The Tigers (1-2), meanwhile, struggled offensively. West Alabama needed a late third set rally to bring its hitting percentage into positive numbers and finish with an average of .026.

Bellarmine libero Jordyn Kuchenbrod also had a personal third set rally by registering 13 digs in the game to finish with a match-high 19.

Knights setter Kristen O'Toole finished the day with 59 assists in the two matches while freshman Sam Rickert added 15 in just two sets of court time.

Bellarmine returns to action on Saturday with another two matches. At 2 p.m. The Knights will face Davenport University, which also won both of its matches on Friday. Then, BU will bring the tournament to a close with a 7 p.m. match against California (Pa.), which split today.
