INDIANAPOLIS—A grueling, five-match road stretch to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play came to end for the Bellarmine volleyball team with a four-set loss at the University of Indianapolis today at the Ruth Lilly Center.
 
Bellarmine opened strongly, taking command about midway through the first set and holding on for 25-20. However, back-to-back 25-18 wins by the host Greyhounds put UIndy in the driver's seat for the match. 
 
Despite trailing most of the fourth set, the Knights summoned a comeback attempt and surged into a 21-20 lead on a service ace by Jordyn Kuchenbrod.  After the Hounds tied it on the next point, Bellarmine appeared to have retaken the lead on the next point, but Bailey Roszman's attack was ruled to have sailed just past the end line and UIndy claimed a 22-21 lead.  Although Roszman tied it up with an emphatic kill on the next point, the hosts took the next three points to secure the match.
 
The Greyhounds' Katie Furlong, who came into the match leading the GLVC in kills, was held a bit below her average but still led all hitters with 16 kills in the match.  Katie Adams led the Knights' attack for the second straight match, totaling 11 kills in today's contest.
 
The play at the net again benefited Bellarmine's opponent. Indianapolis came up with 14 team blocks on the day to just three for the Knights, which helped the Hounds outhit BU .250 to .075 and "out kill" the Knights 56 to 45.
 
Bellarmine's Kuchenbrod—the league leader in digs—came up with a match-high 28 against UIndy, but the hosts won the team dig battle 79-74.
 
Indianapolis improves to 10-3 on the season and remain undefeated in GLVC play at 5-0.  The Knights, who have yet to play a league game at home this season, dropped to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in conference.
 
Bellarmine returns to the friendly confines of Knights Hall for its next two matches, hosting Quincy on Friday and Truman State on Saturday. Start times are 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
