ST. LOUIS — The visiting Bellarmine University men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Maryville on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Junior forward Tomas Bernedo scored a goal and freshman midfielder Jon Tryggvi Arason had an assist for Bellarmine (2-2-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) against the Saints (1-2-2, 0-1-1). Freshman goalkeeper Connor Range thwarted a Maryville penalty kick in the second half.

Bellarmine missed a golden opportunity to pick up a win with the match knotted at 2. A Maryville player received a red card with about 24 minutes left in regulation and yet another Saint was issued a red card with roughly eight minutes remaining. Despite playing with two men up on Maryville for nearly 28 minutes, the Knights couldn't locate the net again and had to settle for the tie.

Bellarmine answered both times it fell behind. Down 1-0, the Knights responded in the 32nd minute when Bernedo finished off a cross from Arason.

Maryville regained the lead shortly after halftime, but Bellarmine evened the match up at 2 on an own goal in the 50th minute. A little later, Range smothered a penalty kick by Pontus Gitselov, who scored Maryville's first goal.

Having the two-man advantage, Bellarmine attempted all four of the shots that were taken over the two overtimes. The Knights finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots, including 5-4 on frame.

Bellarmine plays Friday at McKendree and plays two days later at Southern Indiana.
