Gooley, Ferry locate net as women's soccer collects 2-0 win over Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Fresher and more focused than circumstances could have dictated, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team collected a thorough 2-0 victory over Drury on Friday afternoon at Harrison Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Senior midfielder Kenzi Gooley scored in the first half and junior midfielder Samantha Ferry delivered shortly after the intermission for Bellarmine (9-3-1, 6-3-1 GLVC), which posted its eighth shutout. Gooley, freshman midfielder Brentyn Dodd and sophomore forward Isabella Zamborini tallied assists against the Panthers (1-11-1, 1-9).

Drury had entered the match on a six-game losing streak, but the last five were all one-goal differences.

"Good all-around effort today," Knights Coach Chris Tinius said. "Between time on the road and stopping to train, that was about a 10-hour travel day yesterday. To come out with the early start time and be ready to perform was good to see."

Dodd made her first career start for Bellarmine, and collected her first point. In the 19th minute, she passed to Gooley, who rifled a shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. It was Gooley's second goal of the season.

Bellarmine took the 1-0 lead into halftime, and it didn't take long for the Knights to bump the advantage to 2-0 in the second half. Ferry finished in front of the net off a double assist from Zamborini and Gooley in the 52nd minute for her fourth goal of the season.

"Brentyn took advantage of her first start with an assist on a good finish from Kenz," Tinius said. "The second goal wasn't anything spectacular, but we got a good service from Izzy and we finally had multiple people attacking the ball. It makes a huge difference to get a second goal early in the second half. Then we were able to lock it down with another shutout."

Bellarmine limited Drury to only three shots, including just one on frame. The Knights amassed 13 shots, with three coming on goal.

Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Southwest Baptist.
