QUINCY, Ill.—The Bellarmine Knights passed their first Great Lakes Valley Conference road test tonight, rolling past the Quincy Hawks in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-20) in Pepsi Arena.
Playing just its second true road contest of the season and its first in conference play, Bellarmine took care of business by outplaying the Hawks on both sides of the net. Offensively, the Knights outhit Quincy .227 to .096, and on defense, Bellarmine owned advantages in blocks (6-4) and digs 57-44).
Freshman
Jayme Scott continued putting up outstanding numbers for the Knights, recording another double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Meanwhile setter
Kristen O'Toole doled out 40 assists on Bellarmine's 43 kills while libero
Karleigh Wilson averaged six digs a set in totaling 18 in the match.
Scott was not only effective, she was efficient, hitting .353 on 34 total attacks.
Abbie Oetting also made good use of her swings, racking up 10 kills on 20 swings while hitting .400.
While Bellarmine got the sweep, the match didn't open very well for the Knights as the home team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set. Bellarmine turned it around rather quickly, however, and knotted the score at nine apiece. The Knights took their first lead at 11-10 and didn't trail the rest of the game en route to taking a 25-21 win.
Set two was a runaway for Bellarmine. The Knights erupted for a 14-2 lead and coasted to a 25-15 victory. The Hawks seemed to settle down in the third set and appeared in control when they went on a 4-0 streak to take a 17-13 lead. Bellarmine battled back and finally wrestled the lead away from Quincy at 19-18 and closed the match on a 12-3 run to take set three 25-20.
With the win, Bellarmine improves to 11-4 on the season and 2-1 in GLVC play. The Hawks fall to 5-11, 0-3 GLVC.
The Knights continue their road trip on Saturday at Truman State. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. (EDT).
