Zamborini sinks pair of PKs as women's soccer clips Tritions 2-1 in 2OT

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If nothing else amidst a lackluster outing, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team discovered that sophomore forward Isabella Zamborini was indeed the perfect pick to take the penalty kicks.

On Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, Zamborini accounted for both of Bellarmine's goals by converting on a pair of penalty kicks, including the game-winner in the second overtime, as the Knights squeaked out a 2-1 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

"That was a subpar performance," Knights Coach Chris Tinius said, "but a very important win."

Bellarmine (7-2, 4-2 GLVC) pushed its winning streak to four, the last two after netting golden goals in double-overtime sessions. Missouri-St. Louis (1-7, 1-5) forced the Knights to conjure up another dramatic win after tying the match with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.

"Credit to UMSL: They had more energy than us to start," Tinius said. "I thought we eventually matched it, but by then we had lost most of the rhythm to our game. They made it very difficult on us."

Zamborini drained her first penalty kick in the 21st minute after junior midfielder Natalie Teo was fouled inside the box. The second PK came in the 106th minute after Zamborini was fouled inside the box and made the Tritons pay by burying her match-ending attempt. The two goals gave Zamborini three on the season.

Entering the contest, Bellarmine had allowed only three goals this season — two off set pieces and one on an own goal. Missouri-St. Louis is the first team to score on the Knights in the flow of play. Mia Milazzo was able to play the ball forward while sliding, and Rose Crabtree tracked it down first and converted a shot to tie the match at 1-1 in the 87th minute.

"We said earlier this week we are eventually going to have to be able to win a game when we concede a goal," Tinius said. "There was no reason to test ourselves with that tonight based on some of the point-blank chances we missed in the second half prior to their goal, but our players again showed the fight for each other and resiliency to find a way."

Bellarmine had shots hit off the post and crossbar in regulation. The Knights finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots, with much of the difference coming in the overtimes, where Bellarmine had seven attempts to the two of UMSL.

Bellarmine hosts Lindenwood at noon (ET) Sunday.

Said Tinius: "We have a tough task in front of us on Sunday made tougher now by the extra minutes we had to play tonight."
