LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine volleyball team got swept in a rare Tuesday night Great Lakes Valley Conference match in Knights Hall as the visiting Indianapolis Greyhounds hit .314 to earn the 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) victory.
The match featured several momentum shifts, but the Greyhounds were able to put together several long scoring runs to pull out the win. In the first set, for example, the Knights and UIndy were tied at five when the Greyhounds got hot and went on an 8-0 run. Although Bellarmine clawed its way back to close the gap to just two points, the visitors pulled out the win 25-22.
In the second frame, Bellarmine raced out to a 10-4 lead and held a 15-9 advantage when the Greyhounds unleashed a 13-2 run to put the set away, eventually winning 25-19.
Again, Bellarmine looked ready to battle back with an early 5-1 lead in the third set. However, UIndy came back to tie it at 11 apiece. The Knights were clinging to a 15-14 edge when the Greyhounds got a 5-1 spurt and held on for the 25-22.
The loss overshadowed an outstanding performance by Bellarmine's
Abbie Oetting, who amassed 15 kills while hitting .583. The 15 kills tied UIndy's Katie Furlong for game-high honors. The Greyhounds also got a strong match from Taylor Jacquay with 13 kills on 24 swings with just one error.
Bellarmine slips to 12-5, 3-2 GLVC while UIndy improves to 11-5. 3-2 GLVC.
The Knights are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Springfield, Illinois to take on the Prairie Stars of UIS.
