INDIANAPOLIS — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team made a resilient comeback but ultimately couldn't overcome its shooting struggles in a 52-49 loss Tuesday to Indianapolis at Nicoson Hall in the Knights' Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.
Senior center
Ally Mayhaus scored a game-high 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting and led a fourth-quarter push by Bellarmine (3-3, 0-1 GLVC), which shot a season-low 29.7 percent from the field. Three days after sinking 12 of their 25 3-point attempts against Tampa, the Knights hit only 2 of 17 (11.8 percent) from deep against the Greyhounds (6-1, 1-0).
Despite its shooting hardships, Bellarmine sliced a 14-point deficit with 7:51 left in the fourth quarter to 45-40 in a little over three minutes as Mayhaus took control of the paint while scoring 10 points in the final period on 4-of-4 shooting. The Knights' comeback was slowed by four ensuing turnovers that helped UIndy build its lead back to 50-43 with 2:22 left.
Inside the final minute, a UIndy player was assessed a technical foul. Senior guard
Mikayla Berry canned the two free throws and Mayhaus followed by quickly converting a basket as Bellarmine surged within 52-49 with 26 seconds left.
The Knights would have two more chances after a steal by junior guard
Breia Torrens. After missing a layup but retaining possession on a jump ball, Bellarmine had around nine seconds to attempt a shot, but a deep 3-pointer by junior guard
Tasia Jeffries hit the front of the rim and caromed away as time expired.
Jeffries had seven rebounds while Berry collected eight points and three assists. Torrens had three steals. Dasia Evans led UIndy with 15 points and Emma Benoit chipped in 12.
Bellarmine made more field goals than UIndy, 19 to 15, but the Greyhounds hit 20-of-25 free throws while the Knights had only 10 attempts from the charity stripe, sinking nine.
With both teams having difficulty finding the net, UIndy led 11-8 after one quarter and 20-15 at halftime.
Bellarmine hosts Kentucky State in a nonconference game at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
