Knights baseball swept in doubleheader by Union

JACKSON, Tenn. — The No. 10 Bellarmine University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader Saturday at Fesmire Field by Union. Both losses were by the score of 5-4 and both came in 10 innings.

Bellarmine dropped to 1-4, while Union improved to 6-2.

Game 1: Union 5, Bellarmine 4
Bellarmine appeared well on its way to victory after taking a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning, but Union tied it up with two runs apiece in the eighth and ninth and the Bulldogs won it with a run in the 10th. The winning run came across on the Knights' fourth error of the game.

Two of the five runs Bellarmine allowed were unearned, and that proved to be costly along with spoiling a strong effort on the mound. After a rough debut, senior left-hander Eddie Mathis quickly returned to form and tossed 5.0 scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out two. Sophomore right-hander Brandon Pfaadt allowed one earned run in 3.0 innings of long relief. Freshman right-hander Reece Davis (0-1) suffered the loss.

Bellarmine scored one run in the second and three in the sixth. The first run came across on a ground out by senior designated hitter Tyler Neeley. Sophomore third baseman Jacob Mulcahy had an RBI single, sophomore left fielder Matt Higgins an RBI double and junior catcher Chris Gambert a sacrifice fly in the sixth
.
Senior center fielder Alex Phillips went 3 for 4 with a double and a triple. Mulcahy added two hits.

Game 2: Union 5, Bellarmine 4
Bellarmine couldn't hold a pair of leads in the tail end. The Knights scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, and after Union answered with two runs in the bottom half, Bellarmine scored two more runs in the seventh to take a 4-3 advantage.

Union tied it up in the ninth and loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th. Josh Frantz delivered a one-out, walk-off RBI single to win it. Senior right-hander Kyle Beach (0-1) took the loss.

Mulcahy, senior right fielder Zac Wiley and Higgins opened the seventh with three straight singles, the latter by Higgins driving in a run. Junior designated hitter Deylen Miley tacked on a sacrifice fly.

Phillips had another three-hit game, going 3 for 5. Mulcahy chipped in a pair of hits.

Junior right-hander Jacob Nagel started and allowed two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Junior left-hander Shane Barringer yielded one earned run while fanning three in 3.2 innings of relief.

Bellarmine and Union will play a single game Sunday starting at 2 p.m. (ET).
