LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team made very literal use of the term "stomping grounds" on Monday afternoon.
Making its debut at Knights Field, Bellarmine piled up a total of 29 hits in sweeping a doubleheader against Urbana by scores of 10-5 and 15-3.
The Knights (3-4) racked up 16 hits in the opener and 13 more in the tail end. As a result, Bellarmine's two highest-scoring games thus far this season came against the Blue Knights (0-4).
Game 1: Bellarmine 10, Urbana 5
This game was tight through six innings as Bellarmine held a 6-5 lead, but the Knights pulled away with a four-run seventh.
The first four batters of the frame recorded hits for Bellarmine. Senior center fielder
Alex Phillips laced a triple down the right-field line, sophomore left fielder
Matt Higgins followed with an RBI single and senior right fielder
Zac Wiley missed his second homer of the contest by about a foot as he lined a double off the left-center wall.
Junior designated hitter
Deylen Miley delivered an RBI single and, three batters later, senior first baseman
Tyler Neeley whipped a two-run double down the left-field line as Bellarmine built a five-run cushion.
Wiley went 4 for 5 with two doubles and his second homer of the season. The round-tripper came in the fifth, a towering solo shot to left. Wiley added a sacrifice fly in a three-run second that also featured a two-run double by Higgins, who went 3 for 6 with three RBIs. Phillips, Miley and junior catcher
Chris Gambert added two hits each and Neeley collected three RBIs.
Eddie Mathis (1-1) notched his first win of the season. The senior left-hander allowed three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Junior right-hander
Anthony Ethington tallied his first save of the season after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Game 2: Bellarmine 15, Urbana 3
Bellarmine's seven-run first inning more or less defined this contest. The Knights had five hits in the frame and four walks while sending 13 batters to the plate.
Three of the hits came in Bellarmine's first three plate appearances. Phillips led off with a single, Higgins smacked an RBI double to left center and Wiley followed with an RBI single. Sophomore shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer would tack on an RBI single, and sophomore second baseman
Justin Rouse contributed a two-run single as the Knights pounced on Urbana.
Bellarmine cruised from there. Senior designated hitter
Kyle Beach had a sacrifice fly and Mehlbauer an RBI single in the fourth, and Miley, senior first baseman
Jacob Pendred and Beach all doubled in the Knights' five-run seventh. Pendred drove in two runs with his two-bagger, and Miley and Beach pushed in one each. Pendred made a pair of spectacular defensive plays in chasing down foul balls near the dugout and fence.
Phillips, Pendred, Mehlbauer and Rouse all registered two hits. Beach supplied three RBIs. Wiley, Pendred, Mehlbauer and Rouse each drove in two runs.
Junior right-hander
Jacob Nagel (1-0) pocketed his first win of the season after allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four in 5.0 innings. Bellarmine used four relievers over the final four innings.
Junior left-hander
Shane Barringer struck out the side in the sixth while freshman left-hander
Nick Parrish and freshman right-hander
Reece Davis followed with 1.0 scoreless inning each. Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt retired the side in order in the ninth and fanned two.
