WESTFIELD, Ind. – After a 12-day hiatus, the Bellarmine softball team returned to action on Friday with a pair of games that had been rescheduled after the Midwest Crossover Tournament was canceled due to wet field conditions and poor weather forecasts. Instead of playing in Evansville, Indiana, the Knights shifted in a northerly direction and took on Northwood and Tiffin at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
Bellarmine's day started on a positive note as freshman
Grace Werner smacked a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the first to stake the Knights to a 2-0 lead over Northwood.
The BU lead didn't last long, however. The Timberwolves had an almost immediate answer in plating three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-2 lead.
Northwood added two more in the fifth and tacked another run in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-2.
Bellarmine returned to the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Allison Woosley rapped a single up the middle to score
Sabrina Fussenegger, who had led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. That run would be the last score of the game for Bellarmine.
The Timberwolves were not quite finished, though, striking for two more runs in the top of the sixth to make the final tally 8-3.
Werner was the bright spot for the Knights, finishing the 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Following that game, the Knights moved directly into a contest with the Dragons of Tiffin.
Unfortunately for the Knights, the Bellarmine offense was still stuck in neutral. Over the first four innings against Tiffin, Bellarmine came up with just one base hit. During the same span, the Dragons took a 5-0 lead, scoring twice in the third and sending three runners home in the fourth.
Bellarmine finally got its offense in gear in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. The Knights actually rallied with two outs score all of the runs. With
Sydney Oskin on base after singling, Werner delivered a two-out double to drive in a run.
Hannah Webb followed with a triple to score Werner, and a single by Woosley completed the scoring by knocking in Webb.
The bats then fell silent for Bellarmine as the Knights managed just one more base hit, and Tiffin held on for the 5-3 victory.
Bellarmine, which falls to 4-6 on the season, is back at it on Saturday with yet another schedule change. The Knights will take on Ferris State at 10 a.m. and Ohio Dominican at 2 p.m. Those games were originally announced to be played at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Both will be played at Grand Park.
