Knights fall to Colonials as RMU pulls away in second half

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.—After rallying to a 7-6 halftime advantage, the Bellarmine Knights were shut out the rest of the way as the homestanding Robert Morris Colonials surged to a 15-7 victory at Joe Walton Stadium despite a 21-save performance by Bellarmine goalie Jordan Dondoyano.

The Colonials jumped on top with a goal in the first minute, but Riley Seay netted his first of four goals to draw the Knights even just two and a half minutes later.

Robert Morris then went on a three-goal run to take a 4-1 advantage, before the teams traded goals to end the first quarter with RMU holding a 5-2 lead.

The Colonials notched the first score of the second period, but the Knights owned the remainder of the period, going on a 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead at the break. Morgan Macko got the Bellarmine rally started at the 12:28 mark with a man-up goal.  Later in the period, he would tack on a man-down score with Stephen Votto adding a goal and Seay chipping in two during the run.

Robert Morris actually outshot the Knights 16-10 in the second period, but Dondoyano registered nine saves in the frame to help facilitate the Bellarmine comeback.

The Colonials turned in a commanding performance in the second half, outshooting Bellarmine 28-14 and enjoying a 9-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

"We battled in the first half and played with passion," said Bellarmine Coach Jim Mitchell.  "However, it's a 60 minute game, and we were unable to carry over that momentum into the second half.  Robert Morris is a good team, and we made too many mistakes to stay within striking distance down the stretch.  We will continue to build on the positives and work toward eliminating the mistakes that are within our control."

Robert Morris (1-2) was paced by Matt Schmidt's 5-goal, 2-assist performance with Ryan Smith also registering a hat trick for the Colonials.

Bellarmine, which falls to 0-4 on the season, returns home to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium for its next game, which comes on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Detroit Mercy.
