HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—After suffering a heart-breaking 4-3 loss to Georgia College on Saturday's second day of Alabama-Huntsville's "Charger Chillout," the Bellarmine softball dropped another close game in the 6 p.m. game, falling 5-3 to Montevallo.
Against Georgia College, the Knights found themselves in a game where they were outhitting their opponents but trailed on the scoreboard. That frustration was transformed into exaltation, however, as the Knights plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately for Bellarmine, their exaltation transformed into heartbreak as the Bobcats answered BU's comeback with two runs of their own to claim the walk-off victory 4-3.
After entering the final frame outhitting Georgia 7-6 but trailing 2-0, the Knights finally got something going.
Sabrina Fussenegger drew a one-out walk, and
Grace Werner followed with a single to put the tying run aboard. Freshman shortstop
Hannah Webb then delivered a bases-clearing triple to knot the score at two apiece.
Allison Woosley followed with a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Webb and give Bellarmine a 3-2 lead.
The Bobcats clawed back, however. After Bellarmine issued two free passes—one a hit batter and one a walk, Georgia College advanced the runners with a ground ball out, and Ariel Edenfield provided the game-winning hit to drive in both runners.
Bellarmine finished outhitting the Bobcats 9-7 with Werner posting three base knocks and Webb getting two hits.
Natalie Magnus got the start in the circle with
Sydney Oskin coming on in relief and working two and a third innings.
The second game of the day for the Knights also saw a Bellarmine comeback foiled. Montevallo plated a run in the first inning and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. But, Bellarmine battled back against the Falcons. In the top of the fourth,
Samantha Smith and
Ciara Incorvati both smacked triples and
Carley Ziegler added an RBI single to pull BU within one at 3-2.
After holding Montevallo scoreless in the home half of the fourth, the Knights tied the game in the top of the fifth. Woosley connected for a two-out triple and scored on a Falcon error to make it 3-3.
Montevallo broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when a pair of Bellarmine errors, a base hit, and a sacrifice bunt contributed to two Falcon runs to give them the 5-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Bellarmine got two runners aboard by way of the walk, but they were left stranded as relief pitcher Abbey Pratt got a clutch strikeout to end the game.
Bellarmine falls to 2-4 on the season with two more games to play in the "Chillout." The Knights will face Delta State and Christian Brothers on Sunday's final day. Game times are schedule for noon and 2 p.m. (ET).
