Knights fall short in doubleheader against Davenport

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Davenport on Sunday afternoon at Knights Field. The Panthers stymied the Bellarmine offense in the first game en route to an 8-0 win, and got the bats going early in game two on their way to a 9-3 victory. The losses drop the Knights record to 9-11 on the season.

Game 1: Davenport 8, Bellarmine 0

The Knights struggled to get anything going offensively in game one as they were only able to muster three hits. Davenport took the lead in the third inning on a three-run home run and never looked back.
Bellarmine threatened in the bottom half of the third by loading the bases, but the Knights were unable to capitalize. The Panthers tacked on three more runs in the fourth followed by one apiece in the fifth and sixth to secure the 8-0 win.
Grace Werner reached base in all three of her plate appearances, tallying one hit and two walks to go along with a stolen base. Allison Woosley and Sydney Oskin also contributed one hit apiece.

Game 2: Davenport 9, Bellarmine 3

The Panthers jumped on the Knights early in this one by pushing across two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. Davenport added two more in the fourth and pushed across three insurance runs in the seventh to take a commanding 9-0 lead. However, the Knights did not go away quietly. After only recording one hit in the first six innings, the bats came to life in the seventh. Grace Werner led off the inning with an infield single then Hannah Webb reached on an error by the Davenport first baseman. The next batter, Samantha Smith, got the first Bellarmine RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Werner. Later in the inning, back-to-back RBI doubles by Ciara Incorvati and Allison Woosley scored two more runs for the Knights, but it was too late as Davenport sealed the 9-3 victory.

The Knights will be back at home on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader against Kentucky State. Game one is scheduled for a 2 p.m. (ET) first pitch.
