LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's tennis team motored to its fifth straight win after defeating Huntington 7-0 Saturday at the Louisville Indoor Racquet Club.
Bellarmine (8-1) dropped a mere two games in doubles play to Huntington (9-5), as senior
Maggie Walroth and junior
Ashley Jonathan dominated at No. 1, junior
Jennifer Skonieczny and sophomore
Ava Ratcliff did the same at No. 2, and sophomore
Aubrey Smith and freshman
Madison Devillez followed suit at No. 3.
Bellarmine won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Skonieczny won a tiebreaker at No. 1. Jonathan, Walroth, Ratcliff, Smith and Devillez, at Nos. 2-6, joined her to complete the sweep in the programs' first-ever meeting.
"We rolled in doubles, but Huntington really pushed us in singles. We had to hit a lot of shots to win this match," Knights Coach
John Mican said. "Ashley played with controlled aggression. Her shot selection has become impeccable. It took Maggie a few games to get on track but, once she started going for her shots, she couldn't be stopped. Ava has been playing spectacular tennis all year, and she did not relinquish a single game. Jennifer had a struggle but prevailed. Aubrey blasted her way to another strong win, and Madison had a tough fight but ended up adding to her team-leading win total."
That total for Devillez stands at 27. Devillez and Skonieczy both have 13 singles win to pace Bellarmine in that category. Walroth has won seven of her last eight singles matches, while Ratcliff has won eight consecutive singles matches and nine straight doubles contests. Smith has been victorious in eight of her last nine singles matches.
Bellarmine plays Saturday at Lee.
