Late rally pushes Dolphins past Knights

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team and the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins were neck-and-neck for most of the game, but a late run by the Dolphins allowed them to edge the Knights 11-8 Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Bellarmine drops to 0-7 overall on the season and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. Jacksonville improves to 2-6 overall and picks up its first win in league play.

Bellarmine struck first on Saturday afternoon with a goal by Riley Seay just over five minutes into the game to give the Knights an early lead. Jacksonville then rallied for three straight goals before Ian Miller trimmed the deficit to 3-2 just before the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Jacksonville increased its lead to 4-2, but Bellarmine continued to battle back. Seay netted his second goal of the game with 7:21 remaining to cut the lead to one, and Landon Trout tied things up at 4-4 with 2:15 left in the half.

A penalty on the Knights as time expired in the first half gave the Dolphins an advantage to start the second half and they quickly capitalized to recapture the lead. Jacksonville later extended its lead to a two-goal advantage, but a goal by Bellarmine's Blake Roshkowski cut the lead to 6-5 going into the final quarter of play.

The Knights tied up the game once again early in the fourth quarter on Trout's second goal of the game. However, Jacksonville quickly answered with three straight goals to take control 9-6 with just over four minutes to play. Morgan Macko tried to spark a Bellarmine comeback with his 10th goal of the season, but Jacksonville once again answered with two goals of its own. Seay notched a late goal, but it was too little too late as the Dolphins captured the win 11-8.

The Knights were led offensively by Seay with a hat trick and Trout, who racked up two goals and an assist. Defensively, Eric Rubak caused four turnovers and tracked down four ground balls. In goal, Jordan Dondoyano tallied 11 saves. Turner Lockyear dominated face-offs by winning 13 of 16.

Jacksonville was paced offensively by Evan Tyler, who scored three goals and distributed a pair of assists. The Dolphins goalie, Hunter Sells, recorded 11 saves.

Bellarmine will be back at home again next Saturday to take on Southern Conference foe Richmond at 1 p.m. at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
