COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Bellarmine Knights softball team took their first two games of the Columbus State Classic on Saturday morning, defeating Barry 2-0 and Lynn 4-3 in a couple of games that saw the go-ahead runs cross the plate in the late innings.

The Knights began Saturday with a matchup against Barry, in a game in which runs were at a premium. Early on, both teams struggled to string together hits as the game entered the bottom half of the sixth inning still scoreless.
Bellarmine's
Grace Werner led off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle followed by a stolen base. Later in the inning back-to-back doubles by
Allison Woosley and
Samantha Smith gave the Knights a 2-0 lead.
Barry threatened in the seventh by loading the bases with only one out, but a fielder's choice followed by a popout sealed the game for Bellarmine.
Sabrina Fussenegger was awarded the win after a complete game shutout with four strikeouts.
BELLARMINE 4, LYNN 3 (

In the second game Bellarmine's offense once again got off to a slow start. Through three innings the game remained scoreless, with Bellarmine only tallying one hit and Lynn just two.
Lynn got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with three consecutive singles that resulted in a run and a 1-0 lead that held through five innings.
In the sixth, after a leadoff walk by Fussenegger, a fielder's choice, and a flyout,
Allison Woosley kept the inning alive with a single to the left side.
Samantha Smith then proceeded to bomb the eighth pitch of the at-bat over the center field fence to give the Knights a 3-1 lead.
Lynn countered in the bottom half of the sixth with a two-out, two-run home run that tied the game at 3-3 heading into the seventh.
In the seventh, a
Paige Werner double and back-to-back walks by
Sydney Oskin and Fussenegger loaded the bases for Bellarmine with two outs. A wild pitch allowed Werner to score the go ahead run, giving the Knights a 4-3 lead.
Olivia Knies shut the door in the bottom of the seventh for Bellarmine without much of a threat, securing the win for the Knights.
Bellarmine improves to 7-7 on the year with their next action scheduled for tomorrow in the CSU Classic as they take on Coker College at 11 AM and King University at 1:30 PM.
