Women's basketball drops regular-season finale to UIS

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Four players scored in double figures, but the visiting Bellarmine University women's basketball team fell 90-81 to Illinois Springfield on Saturday in the Knights' regular-season finale.

Bellarmine's loss didn't affect its standing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Point Rating System, which determines spots and seeding in the conference tournament. The Knights (15-11, 9-9 GLVC) entered in sixth and remained in sixth.

Bellarmine will meet third-seeded Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. (ET) Friday in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals at SIU Edwardsville's Vadalabene Center.

Closing out its season, Illinois Springfield (8-18, 5-13) avenged a 75-54 loss to Bellarmine two weeks ago in Knights Hall. The Prairie Stars sizzled from 3-point range, sinking 11 of their 20 attempts. The Knights actually made three more field goals than UIS (29 to 26), but the Prairie Stars hit seven more 3-pointers and were 27 for 36 from the free-throw line compared to Bellarmine's 19 for 27.

Junior guard Mikayla Berry paced Bellarmine with 15 points, sophomore forward Lauren Deel added 14 and junior forward Mallory Schwartz and junior guard Katie Downey chipped in 10 apiece. Schwartz also collected eight rebounds and three assists, and Berry registered four steals.

Lauren Ladowski and Tehya Fortune scored 23 points each for UIS. The duo combined to go 16 for 18 from the charity stripe. Fortune was one of three players who canned three 3-pointers. Ladowski also had nine assists.

Bellarmine trailed 15-11 after one quarter and 36-29 at halftime. After UIS opened the second half with a basket, the Knights went on a 9-0 run to grab the lead. However, later in the third, the Prairie Stars put together a 12-2 run to own a 53-45 advantage.

Bellarmine was within five with 7:53 left in the fourth, but UIS followed with a 6-0 run to take control for good. The Knights never got closer than seven thereafter.
