Knights baseball splits doubleheader with Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Bellarmine University baseball team split a Tuesday doubleheader at Southern Indiana, defeating the Screaming Eagles 13-4 before falling 11-6.

Bellarmine moved to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. USI shifted to 12-8 and 5-3.

Game 1: Bellarmine 13, Southern Indiana 4
After Bellarmine gained a 4-0 lead in the fourth, Southern Indiana rallied to tie the game at 4 after six innings.

However, the Knights answered with nine runs over the final three frames. It began with a four-run seventh in which sophomore left fielder Matt Higgins lofted a sacrifice fly and junior catcher Chris Gambert cleared the bases when he dumped a two-out double into short center field and all three baserunners raced home.

Bellarmine added three more runs in the eighth and then tacked on two more in the ninth on RBI singles by senior center fielder Alex Phillips and Higgins, who had launched his third home run of the season in the first inning.

Senior second baseman Trevor Lines went 4 for 4 with three runs scored as Bellarmine registered 17 hits. He had an RBI single in Bellarmine's two-run fourth inning that made it 4-0. Senior right fielder Zac Wiley had three hits while Phillips, Higgins, Gambert and junior third baseman Deylen Miley chipped in two apiece. Higgins racked up four RBIs and Gambert had three.

Senior right-hander Kyle Beach got a no-decision but had a strong start, allowing two earned runs in 5.0 innings while striking out three. Junior right-hander Anthony Ethington (2-0) notched the win after tossing 4.0 innings of long relief. He allowed two earned runs and fanned three.

Game 2: Southern Indiana 11, Bellarmine 6
This game was back and forth as Southern Indiana built a 4-0 lead after four innings, but Bellarmine rallied to tie at 4 in the sixth when Wiley cranked a three-run homer to center for his team-high sixth long ball of the season.

Southern Indiana regained the lead with two runs in the bottom half, but Bellarmine knotted it up again at 6 in the seventh after scoring a run on a wild pitch and adding another on a Phillips RBI single. The Screaming Eagles, however, responded with four runs in the bottom half, all unearned, and the Knights couldn't recover.

Phillips, Higgins and sophomore second baseman Justin Rouse had two hits each.

Bellarmine's three-game series at Rockhurst has been moved up. The Knights and Hawks will play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. (ET) Friday and then play a single game starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
