KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Senior left-hander
Eddie Mathis hurled a shutout in the opener, and junior third baseman
Deylen Miley launched a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning in the tail end as the visiting Bellarmine University baseball team swept Rockhurst by scores of 10-0 and 4-2 on Friday.
The two victories marked the first sweep of a doubleheader in Great Lakes Valley Conference play for Bellarmine (13-10, 6-4 GLVC). Junior right-hander
Jacob Nagel also turned in a strong start against the Hawks (4-17, 1-9) as the Knights pitching staff allowed only two runs and eight hits over the twin bill.
Game 1: Bellarmine 10, Rockhurst 0
It was a vintage performance on the mound by Mathis (4-1), who tossed a five-hit shutout while striking out nine in 7.0 innings as the Knights reached the 10-run rule. The southpaw walked only one in recording his second complete game of the season.
Offensively, Bellarmine jumped on the Hawks in the first with four straight hits. Senior center fielder
Alex Phillips and sophomore left fielder
Matt Higgins both singled, and senior right fielder
Zac Wiley plated them both with a double. Miley then blasted the first of his pair of two-run homers on the day as the Knights led 4-0.
Wiley had a sacrifice fly in the second and walloped a two-run homer in the fifth, his seventh long ball of the season. An inning prior, junior catcher
Chris Gambert drilled his fifth homer, also a two-run shot.
Wiley's homer pushed the lead to 10-0, and the Knights maintained that advantage through the seventh to reach the mercy rule as Mathis sealed the shutout.
Bellarmine pounded out 13 hits. Phillips, Higgins, Wiley, Miley, sophomore shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer and senior designated hitter
Derek Burns had two apiece. Wiley racked up five RBIs.
Game 2: Bellarmine 4, Rockhurst 2
With one out in the ninth and the game tied at 2-all, Wiley officially reached base in all five of his at-bats after getting hit by a pitch. That brought up Miley, who belted a go-ahead two-run homer to left for his sixth round-tripper of the season.
Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt entered to pitch in the bottom half. Rockhurst got a baserunner on first with one out, but Pfaadt sewed up his second save by following a fielder's choice with a game-ending strikeout.
That capped Bellarmine's stellar pitching over the doubleheader. Nagel allowed a single earned run on three hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Junior right-hander
Anthony Ethington (3-1) earned the win after throwing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Gambert had an RBI single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third as Bellarmine took a 2-0 lead. Rockhurst tied it at 2 with one run each in the sixth and seventh.
Wiley went 2 for 2 and senior second baseman
Trevor Lines also had two hits.
Bellarmine and Rockhurst will play the series finale starting at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
