Saints take two from Knights in softball doubleheader

ST. LOUIS--The Bellarmine Knights had some chances, but the Maryville Saints escaped with the doubleheader sweep today at MU's Weber Field, taking the first game 3-2 in 10 innings before coming back with a 4-2 win in game two.

Bellarmine falls to 13-14 on the season and 2-4 in GLVC play.  The Saints improve to 20-9 and 6-1 league play.

GAME ONE: MU 3, BU 2 (HTM BOX SCORE)

The opener was a classic pitchers' duel between Bellarmine's Sabrina Fussenegger and Maryville's Alyssa Callans. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Saints scratched across an unearned run.

Bellarmine came back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth.  Three consecutive singles by Samantha Smith, Rachel Ayer and Allison Woosley led to a run, and Fussenegger helped her own cause by supplying a sacrifice fly to drive in another.

The Saints' pitcher also helped her own cause in the sixth inning when Callans stroked a solo home run to knot the score at two apiece.

From there, the Knights managed just two more hits over the next four innings, but the Saints' offense also was stymied.  Maryville finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th. A leadoff single and sacrifice bunt set the table for Callans, and she delivered once again with a single to right to drive in the winning run.

Both pitchers went the distance in the extra inning affair with each surrendering just nine base hits and two earned runs.

GAME TWO:  MU 4, BU 2  (HTM BOX SCORE)

The Knights actually outhit the Saints 7-6, but the home team succeeded at "small ball," scoring their first run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly.

Bellarmine's Allison Woosley smacked her first homer of the year to tie the score, but the Knights were a bit unlucky in the timing as a double play erased a baserunner just in front of the round-tripper.

The Saints surged back into the lead in the home half of the second, scoring on a bunt and a single up the middle to take a 3-1 advantage. Maryville tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer.

The Knights' last scoring opportunity came in the the top of the sixth when a pair of singles led to a sacrifice fly by Carley Ziegler, but the Knights couldn't muster any more offense as Maryville hung on for the win.
