CLEVELAND, Tenn. — After both captured a lopsided victory in Tuesday's doubleheader, the Bellarmine University and Lee baseball teams met in the middle Wednesday.
In a tight contest, the Flames scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and kept Bellarmine from scoring in the ninth despite two baserunners aboard as the Knights fell 5-4 at Olympic Field.
Bellarmine (7-6) has struggled in close contests so far this season. With the loss to Lee (10-9), the Knights are now 0-4 in games decided by two runs or less.
Junior catcher
Chris Gambert went 3 for 3 with a double while senior designated hitter
Trevor Lines went 2 for 2. Sophomore outfielder
Matt Higgins chipped in two hits as the Knights tallied 10 total.
Bellarmine scored all four of its runs over the first two innings, including three in the second. Senior right fielder
Zac Wiley and junior third baseman
Deylen Miley smacked back-to-back doubles in the first, with Miley's two-bagger scoring Wiley.
Sophomore second baseman
Justin Rouse lifted a sacrifice fly and Higgins had an RBI single in Bellarmine's three-run second as the Knights led 4-2. However, Bellarmine wouldn't score again as three Lee relievers combined for 6.0 shutout innings.
Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Pfaadt kept Lee at bay with 4.0 innings of long relief as he allowed one run and struck out four, but the Flames managed to tie the game at 4 in the seventh and plated the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Higgins singled and Wiley walked to give Bellarmine runners at first and second with one out in the ninth, but after a pitching change, the Knights followed with a strikeout and the contest ended on a fly out.
Bellarmine begins GLVC play by hosting McKendree in a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
