INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 13 Indianapolis Greyhounds entered play this weekend boasting the best pitching staff in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and visiting Bellarmine got a double dose of UIndy's pitching prowess as the Knights were swept in doubleheader today at Baumgartner Field. The Greyhounds recorded a pair of shutout wins taking game one 8-0 in six innings and closing out game two with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to win 11-0.
In the opener, UIndy hurler Halie Waters faced the minimum 18 batters in the six-inning game. Bellarmine's
Hannah Webb recorded the lone hit for the Knights, but a double play on the very next play erased her from base paths and kept Waters at the minimum.
Meanwhile, the Greyhounds chipped away offensively, scoring two runs in the first and third innings and once in the fifth. Indianapolis closed the door on the Knights with a 3-run sixth inning.
Although the Knights saw a different pitcher in the game two, the results were nearly the same. Lauren Honkomp allowed just three Bellarmine baserunners with
Sydney Oskin and
Rachel Ayer each recording singles and
Carley Ziegler drawing a walk. However, the Knights hit into another double play as Bellarmine made just 17 plate appearances—two over the minimum—in game two.
The Indianapolis offense again chipped away in the early innings before exploding for six runs in the bottom of the fifth as Gianni Iannantone ended the game with a grand slam.
The Greyhounds improved to 41-11 on the season and maintained their spot atop the GLVC standings with a 19-5 mark. Bellarmine slips to 22-25 overall and 10-14 in GLVC play. Of particular concern for Bellarmine fans is that the Knights are now in a three-way tie for eighth place in the league standings, and only the top eight teams advance to the GLVC postseason tournament.
One of the teams the Knights are tied with is tomorrow's opponent, Lewis. The Flyers and Bellarmine are slated to meet in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (EDT). The third team in the mix is William Jewell. The Cardinals host Illinois Springfield in a double dip tomorrow.
