ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Lewis launched a pair of grand slams Sunday in defeating the visiting Bellarmine University baseball team 10-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Flyers (15-16, 10-10 GLVC) took two of three in the series against the Knights (19-16, 10-10) behind a pair of five-run innings that accounted for all of the team's runs.
Bellarmine led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Lewis grabbed the lead when Connor Rutherford smacked a grand slam. The Knights rallied to tie the game at 5 in the eighth, knotting it on a two-run homer by sophomore center fielder
Matt Higgins, but the Flyers countered in the bottom half with another grand slam, this time by Anthony Cavalieri.
Higgins' home run was his sixth of the season. In the fourth, senior first baseman
Tyler Neeley creamed his eighth homer, a tape-measure solo shot that gave Bellarmine a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore infielder
Jacob Mulcahy, who recently returned from injury, had an RBI single in the first and senior second baseman
Trevor Lines added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Neeley and junior catcher
Chris Gambert had two hits apiece. Bellarmine had seven total while Lewis tallied 11.
Bellarmine plays a single game Tuesday at Indianapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET). The teams split a doubleheader Wednesday at Knights Field.
