Women's soccer scores early, but UIndy rallies for 2-1 win in OT

INDIANAPOLIS — Despite scoring a little over eight minutes into the game, the No. 21 Bellarmine University women's soccer team fell 2-1 Sunday in overtime to Indianapolis at Key Stadium in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.

Junior midfielder Samantha Ferry scored in the ninth minute for Bellarmine (3-1, 0-1 GLVC), but Indianapolis (3-0, 1-0) tied it up after halftime in the 55th minute as Amanda Meyer knocked in a free kick from Dana Youssef.

Indianapolis scored the golden goal off another set piece, this one coming about five minutes into overtime and off a corner kick by Alexi Hardie, who scored on the play.

"That was a pretty good effort today against a good team," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "Overall we handled their intensity pretty well and created a few things. We were worried about set pieces coming in. We gave up too many and that eventually got us. We said we'd take fewer shots for more quality chances. That played out as well but their keeper made a couple great saves, and we missed a couple opportunities we have to convert. That's soccer though."

Indianapolis finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots. The Knights attempted three in the first half, four in the second half and one in overtime. The Greyhounds had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

"Indy is a strong team," Tinius said. "We face two more next week (McKendree, Southern Indiana), and the week after that (Quincy, Truman State). We don't have time to pout. We're doing a lot of good things and just have to win more individual moments on a day like this."

Bellarmine hosts McKendree at 3:55 p.m. (ET) Friday.
