QUINCY, Ill. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team delivered its highest scoring output of the season thus far as the Knights defeated Quincy 2-0 Friday at Legends Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Sophomore midfielder
Lauren Mackey and sophomore forward
Isabella Zamborini each scored their first goal of the season for Bellarmine (5-2, 2-2 GLVC), which netted multiple goals for the first time this year. Senior forward
Annabel Moore and freshman midfielder
Brielle Heuglin notched assists for the Knights against Quincy (2-4, 1-3).
"That was a very well-earned road win," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Quincy is always difficult to play against. Finding a second goal was huge and a bit of a weight off of our shoulders."
Mackey tallied the game's first goal after finding the net in the 28th minute as Moore was credited with the assist. The score remained 1-0 at halftime and stood that way for much of the second half until Heuglin found Zamborini, who ripped in a goal for a 2-0 lead in the 79th minute.
"The first goal was a good job from Lauren being ready to pounce on something," Tinius said. "The second one was a great ball from Brielle and good composure from Izzy to finish. In the process of finding that goal, we stayed pretty well organized and that's a good recipe for success."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis collected two saves as Bellarmine posted its fifth shutout. The teams finished with eight shots apiece — four in each half for both — while the Knights took all five of the match's corner kicks.
Late in the contest, Quincy standout Alex Severino needed to be helped off the field after suffering an injury.
"I want to wish Alex Severino the best with her injury," Tinius said. "She's been one of my favorite players during my time in the league. Hopefully it's not as bad as it seemed, but we wish her a speedy recovery either way."
Bellarmine plays at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Truman State.
