Baseball splits doubleheader with Hillsdale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 20 Bellarmine University baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday in its first performance of the season at Knights Field, defeating Hillsdale 5-1 before falling 5-4.

Bellarmine (4-4) had won four straight before dropping the second game to Hillsdale (2-3).

Game 1: Bellarmine 5, Hillsdale 1 (HTM Box Score)
In the opener, junior right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (1-1) was perfect through 3.2 innings and carried a no-hitter through 6.0 frames before surrendering a lead-off double in the seventh.

Pfaadt allowed two hits and one run with five strikeouts against one walk in 7.0 innings. Senior right-hander Anthony Ethington retired the side in order in both the eighth and ninth to seal it up.

Bellarmine scored all five of its runs in the third inning. Senior center fielder John Millay led off with a double, advanced to third on a single by junior second baseman Justin Rouse and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior left fielder Matt Higgins.

After junior right fielder Jacob Mulcahy collected an RBI on a fielder's choice, senior designated hitter Chris Gambert smashed an RBI triple to center. Senior third baseman Josh Finerty followed by hammering an RBI double off the wall in left. Freshman first baseman Noah Nelson tacked on an RBI in the inning.

Nelson registered two of Bellarmine's seven hits.

Game 2: Hillsdale 5, Bellarmine 4 (HTM Box Score)
Bellarmine took a 4-3 lead into the final inning, but Hillsdale's Joe Hardenbergh launched a go-ahead two-run homer with one out. The Knights put a runner on base with two outs in the bottom half, but the Chargers secured the final out.

Bellarmine scored three of its four runs in the third. The Knights plated their first run after a fourth walk in the frame, and Finerty knocked in two more runs with a single.

Hillsdale scored three runs in the fourth to tie, but Bellarmine took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on Gambert's RBI double. The teams had five hits apiece.

Bellarmine will host Hillsdale in a single game starting at noon (ET) Sunday.
